Prototype making

Today's post is going to be quite long so bear with me!

For this brief I am working on at university, I am basically describing the influences in my life in a way that 'will attract, stimulate and engage the viewer.' So far, I have looked at various art journals, graphic design books and pop-up books for inspiration. There are a few that have caught my eye and have given me some great ideas for my work.

From this, I designed some initial ideas on paper and have progressed them to actual models using paper and card. Below are my prototypes... Enjoy!

This is my first prototype idea. At the moment, they don't look like much but they will be stuck down on a map of the United Kingdom. By doing this, the viewer can see how far I moved house when I was a young boy and how this shaped my life.

I am quite fond of die-cutting so I wanted to try this out. Taking one of the chapter titles in my book, I cut out the word 'foundation' on a piece of card. I really like the potential of this as it can work on both portrait and landscape orientations. I am also pleased that the letters can still be read even though I placed the card on top of various colours. I am definitely taking this further for my book.

After watching some tutorials on how to make pop-up pages on YouTube, I decided to have a go myself with a logo I designed for an art festival. My first attempt involved trying a portrait orientation but as you can see, the pop-up effect has not worked. Upon further analysis, I think I am going to have to do my pages LANDSCAPE for the pop-up effect to work.

After figuring out how to do to the pop-up method effectively, I tried again. As you can see, doing this landscape has worked so much better and you can clearly see the 3D effect working well. I was also impressed how neatly the images folds as you close the page. My confidence in doing this book has vastly improved!

Again, I have used the pop-up effect well on these racing cars as the 3D effect makes them appear like they are coming towards you. I did design some pages using 'pull tabs' with these cars but I much prefer this style now that I have made it. Once I add a race track in the background, this may be one of my favourite pages. I'm getting rather excited with the brief now!

For my last prototype, I included an explosion in the background and then used the pop-up effect on the trophy. Having an image behind the trophy emphasises the 3D effect well. However, for the actual pages I will need to reduce the size of the trophy and hide the tabs behind the trophy better. But that's why prototypes are useful eh?!

Overall, I am really enjoying this brief so far as the ideas have been flowing. I cannot wait to develop my ideas further!

Also, if I don't post anything from now till Christmas, I hope you have a good one and New Year too!

My first blog!

Hello internet!

I am new to the blogging scene so forgive me if I don't have a clue what I am doing. Anyway, I am a university student studying Graphic Design and Photography for the next three years so I will be posting some of my best work here or work I find influential.

I hope you enjoy reading my blog,

Mike.
